Zyerr's Leadership Experience
What does success look like to us? It looks like students becoming leaders and living out their faith like Zyerr (pictured on the right). Zyerr’s story is a great example of what we desire for our students as they graduate and transition into young adults that are changed by the gospel.
Zyerr is a student that one of our teachers has invested in over the past few years. He graduated this past June and just started basic training this month! Before he left, he volunteered for his first ever leadership position in his community. Zyerr was a co-counselor at The Village Camp where he led a small group of students and shared a morning devotion for the other counselors! Here is what he said when asked about his experience leading at camp:
1. What was it like getting to be treated as a counselor/leader to students instead of being the student?
The feeling of being a teacher instead of a student really showed me the work that teachers put in. I didn’t actually have to create lesson plans and all but having to watch the videos just like the kids have it that teacher feeling, it also was a great feeling being able to be a young role model for them so that they’d see that you don’t have to wait until adulthood to be into the gospel.
2. What was it like getting to lead the devotion for the other counselors?
Leading the devotion was quite the task but it was such a great experience being able to do something new because I’d never led a devotion before or led a group of adults.
3. What characteristic or skill do you think you are taking with you into serving the military?
The greatest and biggest skill I took away from camp is being able to adapt to hanging around and communicating with adults on a friendship level.
